Sheila MacFarlane - From the Forest Floor the the Atelier

Artist Sheila MacFarlane is to exhibit a selection of prints and paintings influenced by the magnificent Perthshire woodlands at the Aberfeldy Watermill this winter. The show will run from 7th November through to January 2010.

From the Forest Floor to the Atelier will showcase techniques of the artist as a printmaker, painter and observer of wildlife and nature.

The exhibition will feature work that has been developed over the last year following field studies in Perthshire. Taking the Birks of Aberfeldy as a starting point the artist has spent time exploring the natural surroundings and ways in which they can be communicated.

In taking ‘finds’ from nature and incorporating them into the printing process by laying leaves from the forest floor directly on to the etching plate, MacFarlane’s creative practice has echoes of environmental art.

In an Artist's Talk on Saturday 7th November MacFarlane shared printmaking techniques and related details of the time she spent studying under master printmaker Stanley William Hayter in his Atelier 17 studio in Paris during the 60s. Hayter, whose work is on display at the Watermill, is crucial to the development of modern printing techniques.

With a career that spans five decades, MacFarlane has work in collections across the world, and has lectured in printmaking in many arts schools and printmaking workshops around the UK. She currently works from a studio in St Cyrus in the North East of Scotland

Kevin Ramage says:

MacFarlane’s work embodies the long tradition of printmaking, with experimentation and skill underwritten by an acute and sensitive observation of the nature around her. Alongside work by Hayter and other print masters in the gallery, it will be an opportunity to see printmaking at its innovative best.
